Video Editing is for Everyone

“My wedding was shot in 1964 in a dark church. Can you make it lighter?”
“My dad liked big band music. Can you put music behind my video of him?”
“My son scored a winning goal. Can you make it in slow motion?”
We get frequent calls from customers with questions like these, and we’re happy to say that editing video is a specialty. Editing is simply making the videos you shot even better.
If you like your videos you’ll love what editing can do:

Editing allows you to tell a story. People are drawn to stories. When you edit you are creating something more interesting than just random video clips.
Editing sustains interest. It will make your videos concise and have a point. For example, "Our Family at the Lake" - showing quick shots of your family on the beach complete with beach music is much more enjoyable than hours of raw video footage.
Editing is fun and creative. It's a way for you to put your spin and creativity on something you love.

You've probably watched enough television and movies in your life to know what editing techniques are effective even if you don't know what they're called. Here are just a few simple editing techniques that can make your videos even better:

  • Transitions - Have you ever seen a photo montage with images that fade out or fade in? Or a video that slowly goes to black at the end? Those are simple transitions you can put on your video.
  • Color correction - Is your wedding dress more blue than white? Color correction is an easy way to address many issues like this.
  • Titles - Does your daughter have a sports video that needs vital information like her position, number, weight, GPA, etc. on it? Does your son want composers' names on his musical recital video? Putting titles in your videos is no sweat.
  • Music - Nothing is more effective than appropriate music on your videos.
  • Voiceover - Have you ever seen a 50th wedding anniversary photo keepsake with the husband reading a poem he wrote while they were courting? We have. Not a dry eye in the house.
  • Effects - Yes, special effects like slow motion, fast motion, or blur are simple these days with our professional editing capabilities.

When it comes to editing we say: Whatever you can imagine we can most likely achieve. When you bring your editing project to us here's a very basic map:
Removing what you don't want
It may sound simple but the first step is just getting rid of video that's not essential to your story.
Finding and choosing what you do want
This is the beginning of the fun - finding the filet mignon of your project.
Telling a story
This is the most crucial part of your editing and the reason you're doing it. And we're here to help you every step of the way.
Adding the "cool" stuff
This is the icing on the cake. Music, effects, titles, etc. are fun and put the finishing touch on.
Whether you are a business owner or have personal videos call us today. Let's team up and create something special from your video clips. Call us today to schedule an editing consultation and session!

HVS Top Five Family Halloween Movies

Sure, it’s easy to find slashing, gory, hands-over-your-eyes movies for Halloween, but we’re family friendly! Here are a few Halloween movies that are fun for the season, but won’t keep the kids awake all night.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown - Because every generation needs to experience Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, and all the gang for every holiday.

Ernest Scared Stupid - Ernest is always just silly fun. This time he accidentally sets loose trolls, on Halloween, who turn children into wooden dolls. Now he must save his town.
The Addams Family - Because, like Charlie Brown, every generation needs to experience Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, and all the gang – and Halloween is the perfect occasion.
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit - If your kids have never experienced the Claymation inventor Wallace and his dog Gromit they’ll love this one. They rescue a village plagued by a mutant rabbit and save the annual vegetable competition.
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad – A 1949 adaptation of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, it’s a Walt Disney classic that every kid should see.

It’s the Perfect Time to Transfer your Home Movies

When you transfer your old home movies you’re not just preserving your family’s legacy for generations to come, you’re documenting our important historical and cultural heritage as well. That’s why, on October 15th, annual Home Movie Day will again be observed to celebrate these

unique stories written by parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles, and children who lived in the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s and preserved their life and times with a movie camera.

Do you have old family home movies? Now’s a great time to bring them in! This time of year traditionally kicks off a busy time for transferring these treasures. Besides getting on the “Home Movie Day” bandwagon remember that the Holiday season is soon upon us and this is a great gift idea, not to mention that watching these precious memories make any occasion a joyous time for kids, parents, grandparents, and even great grandparents.

Have you been thinking about getting your film transferred? Here are some questions you may have:
Is my film too old?
Probably not. We have seen film from the early part of last century. As long as it’s not disintegrating there should be no problem. If you’re wondering, bring it in so we can make an assessment.
Will my old 8mm, Super8 or 16mm film look good?
Yes! We believe there’s no such thing as a bad home movie! Think of the content on these gems that’s waiting to be enjoyed again!
Will the sound transfer too?
Yes, if sound was recorded it will be transferred. If you’re lucky enough to have sound movies, it’s a treat to hear voices from the past!
What about music or sound on film?
If you like we include background music free of charge.
I want to edit these after they’re captured. Can you help me with that?
Yes. We can deliver your movies in a format that allows you to edit.
Can I organize my film in the order I want?
Of course. Just number your reels and we will put them in that order.
Can I put captions or titles in the film?
Yes. We can put titles anywhere on your captured film.

Home Movie Day and the coming Holidays! There’s no better time than now to transfer those old home movies. Call us today!

How Long Do VHS Tapes Last?

Just like every other technology, video home system (VHS) recording tapes are being affected by technological change. Just as consumers become used to one form of home technology, a new and better technology comes along. Unfortunately, consumers have already recorded many precious moments on their VHS tapes and are increasingly finding that they do not have the same quality as the new technologies being offered today. In some cases, the tapes themselves are beginning to deteriorate. Generally, this deterioration takes place because of incorrect storage, but overall, it usually happens because the recording wears away the tape.

Going Digital

Like many other technologies, VHS tapes are becoming a victim of the digital conversion process. VHS tapes are analog recordings and, as such, will not last if the recording was from a video camera. Commercial movies will last quite a bit longer, but if they are home recordings, they will likely have a storage life of the order of one or two decades, depending on storage conditions.

What Can Be Done?

In many respects the VCR tape has gone the way of the cassette tape. There were plenty of uses for the basic function of the VCR tape, like recording TV shows, but the focus has completely shifted to digital recording devices. The tapes themselves may be around for a while longer, but the machines to play them will likely be gone first. Transferring the VHS images to a digital form becomes the only recourse if you wish to save precious events like an important soccer game or a birthday party.

Will Technological Innovation Ever End?

It is unlikely that it will ever become unnecessary to transfer recordings from one technology to another. Technology just does not stay still. Right now, you need to transfer your VHS tape data to a digital form of a certain format. Five to ten years down the road you will likely be doing the same thing all over again. In a way, it is sort of like death, taxes, and data transfer! Fortunately, there are businesses like HOME VIDEO STUDIO in Visalia that will be happy to do the transferring for you.

Sports Videos. Your own NFL Films-like production in any sport!

Sports action is made for video.

Action, color, drama, and excitement all make for great video stories, whether it's basketball, hockey, soccer, baseball, or any other sport. But the great granddaddy of sports drama is NFL Films. They still lead the way in telling and retelling us mesmerizing legends of the playing field: impossible dreams, long quests, gritty action in all kinds of settings, bitter defeat, and glorious victory.

If you're even a casual fan of pro football you've seen the meticulous production and editing that turn a football game into a ballet, an opera, or a battle between the Persians and the Spartans. Surely you've heard the deep baritone voice of the late John Facenda speak of "the frozen tundra of Green Bay", or a Robert Frost-like poem accompanying the sights of large grown men playing a boy's game. This style - often mimicked and parodied - is the face of the NFL.

What makes these productions so intriguing? Did you know that with today's editing software you can create your own great moments in any sport in dramatic style? We specialize in editing your sports footage into Sports Highlight Videos. Here are just a few of the elements we see in big time NFL Films productions that we can approximate with your sports action:

  • A soft, arty "film" look that tugs the emotions
  • Lots of slow motion.
  • Lots of sound - from the field, the sidelines, the locker room, etc.
  • Booming narrations quoting literature greats like Shakespeare, Frost, and Browning
  • Signature camera shots, tight on the ball, jump cuts, close ups, multiple cameras
  • Dubbed sound bites of enthusiastic local broadcasts over key plays
  • Very macho, muscular music scores

Are the cameras rolling at your local sporting events? The field of athletic competition produces some of the best memories of our lives, and the lives of our children. You have the human drama of athletic competition in your hands as well. What are you doing with it? Where are your son's Little League games? Or your daughter's soccer matches? Or your bowling league? Or your well-played charity golf tournament? Don't let them sit in cameras or in drawers! It's time to make a play and turn these into interesting stories! Let us help you bring all your great sports moments to life!

It's all up to your imagination. We can create highlight arrows, isolation techniques, quick cuts, slow motion, stop action, high energy music, narration...the possibilities are limitless. But in the end you'll have your own "NFL Films" production!

Speaking of video and sports, another of our specialties is a Sports Scholarship Video. More and more coaches use these videos to begin the sports scholarship process. No matter the sport, one thing is sure: There may only get one chance in the Sports Scholarship arena. We know how to do it right!

Do you have good video that shows your athlete in their best light? Coaches will make choices in ten seconds or less to stay or move on. Do you know what they're looking for?

  • A sports scholarship video must be concise and to the point. Our editing skills and equipment assure this.
  • A sports scholarship video must include your name, contact information, school, position, uniform colors, jersey number and current grade level. We can do this correctly and make it look sharp.
  • Don't forget the packaging. The greatest Sports Scholarship video in the world will be passed over if it doesn't look appealing. We know how to package videos with labeling that looks great.

There's a lot that goes into a Sports Scholarship video. Maybe more than you feel comfortable doing yourself! We are able to provide all the elements to present your student athlete in their most favorable light - from shooting your athlete in action to using your video to edit or any step along the way.

Home Video Studio-Visalia: Top 5 Tips for Shooting Sports Action

Do you want to shoot video of a child, or a team for a sports highlight keepsake or even a scholarship video? Here are some time tested tips for shooting sports action.

Good conditions - If you have a choice wait for a day with bright sun, little wind and no rain. Low light is your least favorable condition, and high winds will mess with sound as well as annoy you. Remember, the sunlight is your best friend as long as it’s behind you. Shooting into it sun will give you washed out footage.

Use a tripod - It may be bothersome to set up and place for all your shots but it’s worth the effort. There is nothing more distracting in a video production than a shaky image.

Avoid the zoom - How often do you see a quick zoom in movies, TV shows or live events? Hardly ever. The zoom button is there to frame your shot, not to simulate being closer. If you need a closer shot get closer to the action.

Pay attention to the sound - One of the most neglected aspects of shooting your own sports video is the sound quality. Most built-in microphones don’t do well in wind, causing the ambient sound at the event to be lost. Choose a camera that accommodates an external microphone. These usually have a foam sleeve to cut wind noise.

Watch your subject matter: keep a broad view – Even if there is one person you’re concentrating on (a child, relative, etc.) film and frame the action around them. They need a context. (By the same token, as the cameraperson resist the urge to cheer. Be a discreet presence.)

Home Video Studio in Visalia's Voicemail Greeting Voice Change (for the better!)

Recently, Home Video Studio in Visalia, Ca., upgraded their telephone system to include an upgraded voicemail system, Virtual Receptionist and selectable options for potential clients to listen to more information about our studio. The transition went very well with the owner, Arthur Zepeda, using his own voice to have everyone listen to whenever anyone called 559-732-3050.

A very good friend of Art's, also a small business owner, pointed out that a female voice may be a better option to have people listen to whenever they called.

It's obvious that any potential client would rather have their call answered by a human being first. But if their call is answered by a pre-recorded voicemail greeting, apparently statistics have shown that potential clients respond a little better upon hearing a female voiced greeting to answer their call as opposed to a male voice.

"It's much easier to find a female voice that everyone likes than a male voice that everyone likes," said Stanford University Professor Clifford Nass, author of "The Man Who Lied to His Laptop: What Machines Teach Us About Human Relationships. "It's a well-established phenomenon that the human brain is developed to like female voices."

Arthur Zepeda, knowing he needed to make this change soon, did not have to think very hard on who he wanted to have voice his voicemail greetings! He knew the perfect person to help him was back home on their summer break from Eckerd College in Florida.

He contacted Visalia's own local celebrity, Casandra Castaneda! Her solid resume includes performing in local theater productions like playing Ariel in "The Little Mermaid", Mary Poppins in "Mary Poppins"  and so many more.

Casandra was also the winner of Visalia Teen Idol in 2014!

Home Video Studio of Visalia was extremely proud to have Casandra come in and record our voicemail greetings!

Casandra, thank you very much!

Listen to Casandra at 559-732-3050!

HVS Top 5 Movies with Flowers in the Title

HVS Top 5 Movies with Flowers in the Title

Last month we brought you April Shower movies. That rain-soaked cinema has given rise to May Flower movies. Here are five of our favorites.

Driving Miss Daisy - A story of friendship and bonds that transcend race, religion, ethnicity and many years.

Steel Magnolias - There’s nothing tougher yet more tender than a group of women friends in the south who are all for one and one for all.

Lilies of the Field - An African-American handman happens upon a group of Roman Catholic nuns who have emigrated from Germany. Homer, kind and hardworking, becomes a Godsend to them, building a chapel and changing their lives.

Days of Wine and Roses - Don’t let the title mislead you. Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick shine in a drama portraying a couple’s rise to the heights, aided by booze, and fall to the depths, aided by booze. It received many Oscar nominations, including Best Actor and Best Actress.

What’s up Tiger Lily? – This movie was made from a real Japanese film that is overdubbed with English. There’s only one catch: it has nothing to do with the plot of the original film. The film changes from a spy thriller into a comedy about the search for the world's best egg salad recipe.

Video: A Great Dedication to the Ones You Love

Video: A Great Dedication to the Ones You Love

It’s Mid – May! Memorial Day is a week away! And we’re here in the precious memory business every day! Just think of the occasions this time of year where video is the perfect way to honor someone: Memorial Day, graduations, anniversaries, Father’s Day, birthdays or retirements are all occasions where a video would be the centerpiece of the occasion.

Call us to see how you can use your content to recognize a loved one - from a custom biography called a LifeTIME Video to a Photo Video Keepsake montage to a simple transfer of a precious video tape. Did you know we can also do Video Prints where you can capture an image from one moment in a video? What about simply editing together choice video clips of your subject? Do you want your video to be funny? Solemn? Inspiring? All of the above? You can!

Think of the people you love, living or departed, whose lives are recorded on film, videos, slides, and photos. What do you have? Here is a list of some content you can use for lasting tribute to anyone you want to honor. And the best part is you can use a few or all of them, depending on what you have, what you want, and how much time you have.

Photos - Pictures are usually the dominant media of any tribute. Whether a simple PhotoVideo Keepsake montage or a more complex presentation there's something about a photo that captures moments and emotions like nothing else. We have the best equipment and expertise to ensure your photos, whether prints or digital, will look the best they can.

Video - Old videos will bring life and motion to your project. Do you have video that captures your subject living life? Laughing? Loving on their kids or grandkids?

Home Movies – There’s something fascinating and timeless about old home movies. If you’re lucky enough to have old movies of your subject they can turn your project into a gem!

Interviews - On-camera interviews are a great way to include friends, family members, or anyone who tells a good story. We can shoot the interviews for you or you can do them yourself and bring them to us.

Audio - Did you know we can transfer audio from cassettes, reel-to-reel, and even old wire recordings? If part of your subject's life is available only on audio we can transfer it and find a way to mix it in.

Music - Music is the magic in video. As emotional shorthand, it sets the mood, the time, and the place.

Titles - Whether it's dates, people, or places - whether ornate or simple - titles tell a lot in a video tribute.

Voiceover - Using first person voiceover narrative in a video production is a very personal way to get a message across.

Pictures, videos, home movies, audio recordings - all these wonderful resources are waiting and just need you to add your imagination. With our professional production available at a reasonable price why not take advantage of today's technology to create a one-of-a-kind gift dedicated to the one you love? We have the equipment, experience, and creativity to make it the very best.

Shower the People You Love with Video Gifts!

Shower the People You Love with Video Gifts!

It’s April! After a long march through March it kinda’ puts some spring in your step doesn’t’ it? Now remember, there are some red-letter days just around the corner where you have occasion to celebrate your loved ones, and the perfect centerpiece to these events is a Photo Video Keepsake. What are your plans for:

  • Mother's day? Nothing will move Mom and everyone who loves her like a powerful celebration of her life in photos and music. This is a perfect way to honor her with a gift that will last for generations!
  • Graduation? A “birth to graduation” montage is the best way to say “I’m proud of you!” Photos, videos, certificates, first grade, first communion, first date....all in a unique and creative presentation.
  • Anniversaries? Been married one year or sixty? How moving would a tribute to your beloved be as your time together is captured through images, video and music?

How does a Photo Video Keepsake work?
We use photos, videos, and/or slides of the honoree (as many as you like) along with your choice of appropriate music. We usually add beginning and ending titles to the production, then we put it all on a DVD or a video file for easy viewing.

Will they like it?

Only if they enjoy being honored in the most amazing way imaginable. Photo Video Keepsakes are:

  • Personal - Keepsakes are the perfect way to put anyone in the spotlight. What will highlight a special day more than favorite photos and inspiring music? Each Keepsake is a unique story - a customized testimony to your loved one.
  • Powerful - What better way to say "I love you" or "I'm proud of you" or "I'd do it again" than with the power of image and sound?
  • Portable – Photo Video Keepsakes are viewable anywhere you can watch video. Homes, offices, auditoriums, fellowship halls… they are the perfect way to honor anyone, anytime and anywhere.
  • Practical - Keepsakes make great gifts, not just for the subject, but for all your loved ones. Easily duplicated. Easily labeled.

HVS Top 5 April Shower Rainy Movie Scenes

April showers make great movie scenes. Okay, any rain – the more the better - makes a good movie scene. Here are a few memorable ones:

The Shawshank Redemption - Cleansing, washing rain. Redemption. Freedom. And oh, what he had to endure to reach it.

Singing in the Rain - It took three days to shoot this scene and Gene Kelly was sick the whole time. Didn’t his mother tell him to come in out of the … never mind.

Seven Samurai - An influential scene that’s been studied and copied for years. And the Oscar goes to…Rain!

Four Weddings and a Funeral - A romcom needs rain. A British romcom needs buckets and buckets of rain.

Blade Runner – Probably the granddaddy of all rainy movies. How long since you saw this classic? Maybe April is the time to see it again.
