Video & Film to DVD: Give Thanks for the Memories

Thanksgiving is almost here - a time when hearts start turning toward home. The family is together. Friends are dropping by. Laughter. Fellowship. Retelling old stories and making new ones. This time of year is made for video - so turn home with Home Video Studio! Video is the perfect Holiday gift and there's still time for your project to be done and waiting under the tree!
Speaking of Thanksgiving, as is our custom this time of year, let's go around the table and hear from a few folks who took the time to be thankful. Maybe you'll get some ideas of your own.

Allison from New Jersey: Strapped for a holiday gift idea for my husband, I saw an advertisement for Home Video Studio and thought how great it would be to copy our wedding VCR tape to DVD. Dan was able to help me and the turn around time was incredible. Can't wait to watch the video and others during Christmas week. Thank you!

Dennis from Indiana:
Home Video Studio was very professional and efficient. In a matter of an hour we were able to edit three individual videos into one with four independent videos playing simultaneously and looping. Thanks.
Robert from Ohio:
Thank you for turning our 8mm home movie films into DVDs. We have really enjoyed them, our children and grandkids have too. Our kids never saw my father or my wife's mother, so that made them real special.
Jennie from California:
I just wanted to thank you for the wonderful job you did. The photos we had of our grandmother with a memorable song all on DVD brought tears to my eyes and all the memories come alive over again. Thank you for such a special photo keepsake that our family can cherish forever!
Such praises are music to our ears. We'd like to hear yours in the weeks to come! In case you still need some ideas here are a few more ways to "give thanks":

HVS Top Five Patriotic "Feelgood" Movies

HVS Top Five Patriotic "Feelgood" Movies

The Great American Home Movie is "America in Red, White and You". This month we celebrate movies that depict our American ideals and attitude.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington - An idealistic young man, appointed as a U. S. Senator, stands against graft and the corrupt "good ole' boys network" of cynical politicians in Washington.

Saving Private Ryan - A group of soldiers who have barely made it in the Normandy Invasion are given the task of locating and delivering back a paratrooper who is the only survivor of four brothers. Duty, honor and courage keep them on their mission as they encounter many obstacles.

The Patriot - As a peaceful man Benjamin Martin didn't live to fight - but even peace lovers will fight to live. Especially if life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are at stake.

Rocky - America is a nation made of second chances. Rocky Balboa, a broken fighter down for life's count, gets another shot to do it right.

Apollo 13 - A true story. Three astronauts, with the support of Mission Control, must devise a strategy to return to Earth safely after their spacecraft undergoes massive internal damage.

Home Video Studio Presents Major Motion Picture

"...movies tell us so much about ourselves- not just what we did, but what we thought, what we felt, what we imagined, what we aspired to..." - Independent Lens

Digitally transferring your precious home movies is more than a "job" at Home Video Studio. We have always considered it a mission to preserve a part of the story of America as "written" through the lens of parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles, and children who lived in the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s and documented their life and times with a home movie camera.

As far back as the early 1990s, when Robert Hanley (our Founder and President) started transferring these home movies to video tape, he began to see a unique story emerge from the cameras of these everyday Americans. It's a story from a sweeping era of great change that began with our "marching home" from WWII and ended with Watergate. It's a story from an era that brought us Rock 'n Roll, the Civil Rights Movement, Viet Nam, Woodstock, Watergate and home computers. It's a story that, although born amidst the aftershock of a terrible war, brought theretofore unparalleled stability, leisure, mobility and discretionary income. Best of all it's a story written, heart and soul, by those who lived it: It's a story of you! This is the cinematic canvas for a mission that started over twenty years ago: To present the Golden Age of Home Movies on a silver platter on the big screen.

On October 19th, in conjunction with International Home Movie Day, Home Video Studio took a big step in this ongoing mission. The Great American Home Movie, a feature-length documentary produced and directed by Robert Hanley, commenced its finishing stages. After gathering thousands of hours and tens of millions of feet of home movies from people just like you (if you contributed your film, by the way, thank you!) we now begin the process of distilling it all into a ninety minute portrait of this time in America.

Besides a custom musical score by three-time Grammy and five-time Emmy-nominated composer Steve Dorff this movie will feature interviews with storytellers who lived in these times. This process of choosing the final interviewees for The Great American Home Movie also began on October 19th by way of open casting calls. These took place in twenty-five cities across the United States. If you missed the October 19th date don't worry! We are still auditioning our storytellers so please call us to see how you can participate.

As you can imagine this is where the fun really starts! The Great American Home Movie has been a grassroots project from its inception. (the subtitle of this movie is "America in Red, White and YOU") Please watch our short video on why we think this movie is important to America. If you want to help Kickstarter.com page. You don't have to look far to see that America has been divided lately in our heartfelt beliefs on important issues. With that said, maybe there's never been a better time for The Great American Home Movie to come along. As the images of an earlier America roll by and as the stories of our elders began to be told it quickly reminds us that we've always been of different stripes and we've always been outspoken as individuals - but we've always come together around the things in this country that we love. Nowhere is that more aptly portrayed than in The Great American Home Movie.

At Home Video Studio those 8mm, Super 8mm and 16mm reels you bring in are more than just film. And it's more than a project. Together we are teaming up to preserve something precious for you and culturally significant to our country. Why would you look anywhere else? Whether you have film that needs our TLC, or whether you want to become involved in The Great American Home Movie, or both - call us today!

Open Casting Call for The Great American Home Movie on October 19, 2013!

America is a land of stories, and we need yours!  That's why The Great American Home Movie is searching for people who lived in the United States between 1946 and 1976 and who are at least 40 years of age to tell their stories of a time when American life was documented in a unique and intimate way:  The Golden Age of Home Movies.

The Great American Home Movie, produced and directed by Robert Hanley, is a feature length documentary film.  Distilled from thousands of hours and millions of feet of 8mm, Super 8 and 16mm film it explores American life from the perspective of people's home movies taken in the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s.  This film is also complemented by a custom music score by three-time Grammy and five-time Emmy-nominated composer Steve Dorff.

A vital component of The Great American Home Movie will be interviews of select Americans who lived in this time. This is where you come in!  Your story is important to this project.  An open casting call for interviewees in the final production will be held on October 19, 2013 at Home Video Studio 4844 W. Rialto Ave., Visalia from 10 am to 2 pm.

We are especially interested in people who took home movies and/or 35mm slides, or were the subject of those movies and pictures. If you remember Mom and Dad getting out the movie camera (or you were Mom and Dad) then we want to hear from you!

The Great American Home Movie will highlight America’s “Coming of Age” period. We want to hear about your experiences during this time: The Cold War, The Korean Conflict, the birth of Television and Rock ‘n Roll, Camelot, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Civil Rights Movement, the British Invasion, Vietnam, the Summer of Love, Woodstock, the Moon Landing, Watergate, computers and the birth of Apple and Microsoft.

What an era of sweeping change - yet unparalleled stability for average Americans!  It was a revolution in jobs, careers, businesses, automobiles, birthing babies and raising families, childhood, toys, family gatherings, cookouts, picnics, holidays, vacations, schools, sporting events, weddings and funerals – life and living.  What was your part in the revolution during this Golden Age of Home Movies?  Come by Home Video Studio 4844 W. Rialto Ave., Visalia on October 19 from 10am to 2pm and tell your story!  Should you be chosen as one of the featured interviewees the filming will begin in 2014 with a movie release in 2015.  There is no compensation for the interviewees.

The Great American Home Movie will have a universal impact - like no other documentary ever produced.  And you have an opportunity to be part of it!  American families tell their own stories - their hopes, desires, and most special moments. It’s America in Red, White and You!

SYNOPSIS OF THE GREAT AMERICAN HOME MOVIE
Post World War II America – the Baby Boom generation era, beginning in the mid-1940s and climaxing in the 1960s, stretching into the 1970s – redefined and challenged the traditional American experience.  It was an amazing time of great change – the re-industrialization of America, the Korean Conflict, the birth of Television and Rock ‘n Roll, Camelot, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Civil Rights Movement, the British Invasion, the Cold War, Vietnam, the Summer of Love, Woodstock, the Moon Landing, Watergate, Computers and the birth of Apple and Microsoft.  Yet this era of sweeping change brought unparalleled stability for average Americans – jobs, careers, businesses, automobiles, birthing babies and raising families, childhood, toys, family gatherings, cookouts, picnics, holidays, vacations, schools, sporting events, weddings and funerals – life and living.

What is even more amazing is that all across the country, Americans captured these precious moments as they happened on 8mm and 16mm motion picture film – the Greatest Generation, the parents of the Baby Boomers, documented this “Coming of Age” period in American history. This is the context and cinematic canvas for The Great American Home Movie – a feature-length documentary shot by parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and yes, even their children.

Over the past twenty years, Producer/Director/Editor Robert Hanley has been evaluating, capturing and archiving America’s home movies. Culled from over 5,000 hours of 8mm, Super-8mm, and 16mm film, The Great American Home Movie engages and electrifies the viewer, first in the simplicity of its subject matter and then in the poetry of moving images – Dad grilling hamburgers on the back porch for the family’s 4th of July cookout; Betty unwrapping her brand new Barbie Doll on Christmas morning; Billy riding his first Schwinn bike down a gravel road, fishing pole over his shoulder; Baby Karen taking her first steps; and Corporal Johnson, home from the war, washing his brand new Chevy.

Added to these iconic images is our American landscape – small towns, big cities, suburbs, farms, schools, roads and highways; city parks, national parks, zoos, and monuments. These scenes, and thousands of others, comprise the single, constant theme that ties The Great American Home Movie together: the American experience.   Multiply these iconic images by the more than thirty-year chronological time-span of this documentary and the very ordinary becomes truly extraordinary!  Hanley has rescued, edited, and woven together these incredible, priceless images with real live accounts of those days by the Americans who lived it. Everything is set to a lush musical score by Composer/Songwriter Steve Dorff.

The Great American Home Movie has a universal impact and is like no other documentary ever produced.  American families tell their own stories with their own cameras, displaying their hopes, desires, and most special moments. They captured scenes from everywhere – from living rooms, back yards, parades and playgrounds to Disneyland, the Mississippi River, and the Washington Monument; indeed from “sea to shining sea.” And while they were at it, they covered most of America’s historical moments as well. As groundbreaking and graceful as Disney’s Fantasia, reflecting the real and surreal spontaneity and liveliness of Woodstock with the elegance and fun of The Sound of Music, The Great American Home Movie will grab your heart and move you to tears of joy. It’s America in Red, White and You!

HVS Top Five Young People's Sports Movies

One of the first places we learn "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat" is in sports. Here is our list of films that remind us of those days.

Remember the Titans is based on the true story of African American coach Herman Boone as his high school football team is forced to integrate. Inspiring.

The Sandlot is a fun coming of age movie with an ensemble cast. If you ever thought summer was invented for goofing off and playing baseball this one's for you.

Bad News Bears is a classic. A grumpy ex-minor league curmudgeon coaching a team of misfit kids always makes for great entertainment - especially when his ace on the mound is a girl.

Space Jam has Michael Jordan, Looney Toons characters and aliens all in one movie. And a hit soundtrack. What more could you want?

The Mighty Ducks is about a narcissistic lawyer sentenced to serve community service by molding a bunch of misfits into a hockey team. In the meantime he actually becomes the person he always wanted to be.

Remember your Great Sports Moments on DVD

If there's ever a place where the cameras are rolling it's at local sports events. And why not? The field of athletic competition produces some of the best memories of our lives, and the lives of our children. And with a Sports Highlights Video you can make those moments impactful, dramatic and memorable!

It's appropriate that we are focusing on Sports Highlights Video this month at Home Video Studio, for it was in September last year that we lost the man who invented the way we look at sports highlights today - Steve Sabol. Like Henry Ford, Walt Disney, Steve Jobs, and a few other gifted and hard working visionaries, Sabol redefined not just an industry, but stamped an indelible mark on American culture. As an artist he was a storyteller and used the human drama of athletic competition to weave a tale. With the filmmaker's tools of super slow motion, microphone techniques, reverse angles, multi camera angles and powerful music he captured our imagination and turned an ordinary athletic event into a Shakespearian drama. Television programs like ESPN's SportsCenter and similar sports highlight favorites that have become part of our day simply would not exist without the vision of Steve Sabol.

You have the human drama of athletic competition in your hands as well. What are you doing with it? Where are your son's Little League games? Or your daughter's soccer matches? Or your bowling league? Or your well-played charity golf tournament? Don't let them sit in cameras or in drawers!

It's time to make a play and turn these into interesting stories! Let us help you bring all your great sports moments to life! It's all up to your imagination. We can create highlight arrows, isolation techniques, quick cuts, slow motion, stop action, high energy music, narration...the possibilities are limitless. But in the end you'll think you were watching SportCenter.

Finally we can provide professional packaging with an attractive label and DVD cover, as well as a DVD menu with thumbnail chapters. Think of it! Your high school and college games or your kids' games. Bowling. Softball. Fishing. Golf. All edited to your liking into a neat presentation that you will enjoy and show again and again.
